Please read the following brief history of St. Augustine. You can also learn more about St. Augustine in his book "Confession" which is currently available at www.staugustinecatholicshop.net
Augustine’s Mother’s name was Monica born in the year 331 in Tagaste North Africa which is now known today as Tunisia. Monica married at the age of twenty-two to Patricius a fifty-five year old pagan in the year 353. While Patricius and Monica were married, they had three children. The first son was Augustine born November 13, 354.The second son was Navigius, which grew up to be a fine young man, and a daughter named Perpetua.
Patricius was a very violent man and Monica won him over with her patience. Monica’s goal was to win her husband for Christ. Monica was truly a woman of strong faith and love for God. Monica finally attained her goal when her husband died a Catholic. Augustine was only seven years old when his father died.
Augustine’s troubles started when he became an teenager . At the age of sixteen, Augustine was stealing and living a disorderly life. Augustine was always avoiding his loving mother Monica. When he departed to Carthage for more study, it was more difficult for Monica to talk to her son Augustine about God. Augustine was living in sin at the age of eighteen. He had been living with a mistress and their illegitimate son named Adeodatus. Monica continued to pray for her son Augustine. When Augustine meet St. Ambrose in Milan in the year 384, Monica’s prayers were finally answered for her son to see the love of God and to get back into the Catholic faith and Church. “Ask and you will received, Knock and it will be opened” (Mathew 7:17).
Like St. Monica, our mission is to bring the fallen Catholics back to the Catholic Church. James 5:19 “My brothers, if anyone among you should stray from the truth and someone bring him back, he should know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.”
Prayer
“O God, Comforter of the afflicted and salvation of those who hope in You, You mercifully accepted the tears of Blessed Monica for the conversion of her son Augustine. Grant that through the intercession of these two saints, we may weep over our sins and obtain Your forgiveness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
